Home studio recording questions (guitar)?
1) When recording an acoustic guitar, is it better to mic the guitar, to use an internal pick-up, or both?
2) What is more important for a clear guitar tone, a very good guitar, or a very good pickup/mic?
Please elaborate on what a "good" mic/pickup and a "good" guitar are, in your opinion.

1) It's better to mic the guitar unless you have a really good pickup like the LR Baggs, PUTW, B-Band, or similar. However if all you have is an under-saddle piezo pickup you're much better off with a microphone.
2) A very good guitar is more important. Even the best Neumann condensor microphone won't make a crappy guitar sound good.
Everyone's definition of what a "good" guitar differs. I use a Martin OM-45 which I've owned for 30 years. It lists for $10K and sells for $6,000 now. That's a good guitar. There are of course lots of good guitars that aren't that expensive. Good acoustic guitars in my opinion are Santa Cruz, Collings, Goodall, Huss & Dalton, Lowden, Breedlove, Bourgeois, R. Taylor, and several others.
